Right in the midst of the Atlantic Ocean … lies La Palma, a World Biosphere Reserve, Starlight Reserve and with a Marine Reserve. It covers a surface area of 706 square kilometers and offers plenty of leisure activities. Hiking, mountain bike, diving, paragliding, boat trips, and much more.
On this island, everything is possible. By sea, by air, by land, there is an adventure in every corner. This is the ideal environment for an adrenaline rush and your holiday here is the perfect time to get back in touch with nature and have fun.
La Palma is a traditional and unspoilt destination, which has managed to preserve the things which make it special. A destination with a thousand details and corners to delight all your senses. Best of all is the #LaPalmaEffect. Indescribable, unique… we can only say that you will long to return to La Palma.
The #LaPalmaEffect conceives the journey as a multi-sensory experience. The island is a haven for the relict subtropical vegetation known as laurisilva or laurel forest (which disappeared from the rest of Europe 20 million years ago), a shelter of peace and tranquility located in Europe’s southernmost territory in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
A deep body and spirit connection will make you feel at peace with yourself in La Palma, as the island’s many visitors can attest. Sight, taste, touch, smell and hearing: all senses will be experienced intensively, making you feel revitalised and energetic.
Could you imagine just for a while what it would be like to lie down, look up into the sky and all you can see is a dark and clear night sky with small shimmering points? Or watch a shooting star streak past? Could you imagine just for a while what it would be like to wake up surrounded by birdsong or cawing choughs, breathe in pure air perfumed with pine trees?
Could you imagine just for a while what it would be like to fall asleep while listening to the water flowing along the bottom of the ravine? Or to sleep inside a “crater”? Camp inside of the Caldera de Taburiente National Park and give yourself one of these gifts.
Admire dawns and dusks, forget all your worries with the natural essence and energy of La Palma’s splendour makes it an ideal wellness escape. Discover the natural beauty that lies under the surface, from caves and arches to a beautiful marine reserve.
No visit to La Palma is complete without witnessing the “Sea of Clouds”. A natural phenomenon caused by the Trade Winds. They push the clouds against the summits, making the humidity condense in mid-elevation zones in the north and northeast. Winds at higher levels, characterised by their warmth and dryness, prevent the clouds from ascending so that once you are above 1,800 metres you can see them below you.
La Palma possesses certain unique environmental features which have won it the distinction of being named a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve. More than one-third of its surface area is protected land, the highlight of which is the Caldera de Taburiente National Park. Its landscape is the result of a dramatic formation process that took millions of years and houses a multitude of microclimates and surprisingly contrasting vegetation.
At its highest point, over 2400m above sea level, the Roque de Los Muchachos Observatory rises above the “sea of clouds” where the atmosphere is clear and stable thanks to the Atlantic Ocean. Consequently, this is considered one of the best places on earth to observe the sky.
The island is full of volcanoes, but if there is an area that stands out for its craters that would be the Natural Park of Cumbre Vieja. The best way to enjoy this natural spectacle is to hike the famous Route of the Volcanoes.
The best way to enjoy this natural spectacle is to hike the famous Route of the Volcanoes to the lighthouse of Fuencaliente, passing close by Teneguía volcano which, until September 19th 2021, had the privilege of being the most recent eruption on Spanish soil. If you want to know more about volcanology, the Visitor Centre San Antonio Volcano is very close. There you can learn its secrets and walk along the crater rim.
La Palma has many popular beaches, offering all kinds of leisure and entertainment services. It also has plenty of almost deserted beaches where you can enjoy wonderful solitude and tranquillity. While La Palma isn’t primarily a sun and sand resort, it has several outstanding beaches, with pristine sand and crystal-clear waters, along with untouched scenery and imposing cliffs.
There are some beaches which you have practically to yourself and in which the word “crowded” is totally unknown. This is one of the main characteristics of La Palma’s beaches: there’s no need to get up early to get a place or to stake the umbrella.
A place that knows how to preserve its traditions, making this island an incredible, authentic place. Learning about the architectural, cultural and historical heritage of the island is an enriching experience that should not be missed. This is La Isla Bonita, the Beautiful Island.
Desserts, liqueurs, fruits, nuts, meats and fish are part of the extensive list of local products that define the gastronomy of La Palma, where simple and traditional foods coexist with a more elaborate and avant-garde cuisine. An island full of flavour and part of Tasting Spain: Tasting La Palma.
La Palma, like the rest of the Canary Islands, has a favourable climate. All year round it enjoys pleasant temperatures and fantastic weather. With a small change in temperature between summer and winter, the island boasts spring weather practically all year round. As such, you can enjoy a swim in the sea in December or take a pleasant stroll in mid-August, without suffering the inclement weather typically found at these times of the year.
