Kairouan, El Jem and Monastir – Full-Day Tour – Monday 2nd August
Join us to celebrate the solar eclipse in style as you embark on a full day, 3 city tour of Tunisia.
After hotel pick-up at 0700hrs your first stop is Kairouan. The fourth holy city of Islam is a model of Arabic architecture and a landmark of spirituality. Islamic buildings and relics fill the city. Kairouan is also a world renowned centre for carpet-making. The majestic Grand Mosque is the oldest Muslim place of worship in North Africa and it is a model for most architectural styles all over North Africa all the way to Andalusia in Spain. The smaller “Mosque of the Barber” is named after one of Prophet’s Mohammad companions, who came and died in Kairouan during the first Arab conquest in the 7th Century AD.
You will also visit the Aghlabid Basins, a grand hydraulic installation that provided water for townspeople since the Middle Ages in an arid region. Kairouan is also a world renowned centre for carpet-making.
Then it’s off to El Jem. This is where you will make a special stop to witness the ‘solar eclipse of the century’ and experience about 3 minutes of totality. El Jem is a witness to ancient Rome mighty rule in North Africa. Its well-preserved Colosseum is the largest outside of Italy. The site is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage.
The afternoon will be spent in Monastir to enjoy such sites as the 8th century fortress Ribat of Monastir, Habib Bourguiba Mausoleum, The Medina and Souks, before returning to your hotel in the evening.
