Situated on the south west coast of Italy, Amalfi is a glorious town of picturesque scenery and breathtaking coastline. Around 24 miles south east of Naples, Amalfi is filled with history, making it the perfect holiday destination for anyone looking for that little bit of culture.

Amalfi Coast is perfect for a romantic, cultural getaway. Amalfi Cathedral is a must see, built in honour of St Andrew in the 12th and 13th Centuries while Duomo di Salerno is a breathtaking church that will leave you feeling inspired. Less than an hour train ride away is the historical mecca of Pompeii, the site of the Roman civilisation devastated by the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in AD 79.

The areas rich history provides a variety of historical sites and churches, and the beaches are a delight in the summer. Marina Grande is the largest beach on the Amalfi Coast and offers a great space to relax and enjoy the magnificent views while Marienella Beach offers a slightly smaller alternative.

The Duomo Cathedral attracts flocks of tourists every year, but it is the picturesque seascape that steals the show on the Amalfi Coast.

Amalfi is part of the Campania region and was once known as the breadbasket of Italy due to its extensive grain trading. Its advantageous situation on the coast enabled the area to prosper as a port, trading across the Mediterranean with a number of imports and exports, from salt to slaves. The region endured occupation by the Greeks, the Normans and perhaps most influentially the Romans, during which time the area reached its prosperity peak. The great location also means that boat trips are high in demand with tourists flocking to see the wonderful sights of the coast.

However, Amalfi began to struggle economically during the medieval period as cities such as Pisa and Genoa began to seize control of Italy’s commerce. Today, Amalfi attracts many tourists to its beautiful coastline and is officially considered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site The beautiful town of Le Ville di Ravello is a hit with locals and tourists alike due to its small yet quirky nature.

If you’re looking for a slightly more active holiday, head to Valle delle Ferriere where you can enjoy a hike through the more rural areas of the resort. The higher you climb the better the views get with magnificent views of Scala, Ravello, Amalfi and Atrani. Or if you prefer, head to Fiordo di Furore and take a dip in the cool waters.

Amalfi attracts many tourists eager for an insight into the rich cultural heritage of the area, with the footprints of Greek, Norman and Roman civilisations still visible today. During the late 19th century, Amalfi enjoyed a quiet revival as the muse for many artists, with Ibsen and Wagner crediting the area as the inspiration for a number of paintings. The area is also famous for its production of Limoncello, a bright yellow liqueur made from the areas abundance of citrus fruits. So if you are thinking of going on holiday to Italy, the Amalfi Coast is one place you certainly must visit.
