9 Best Beaches in Malta

If you’re planning to visit Malta this year, you might be drawn to its historical sites and brilliant beaches. Malta is made up of three islands; mainland Malta, Gozo to the north and tiny Comino nestled in-between. Famous for its Mediterranean sunshine and beautiful beaches, we’ve rounded up some of the best beaches in Malta to include in your holiday. From bustling activity beaches to tranquil paradises, these islands have something for everyone.

1 Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon can be found between Comino and the isle of Cominotto. Its white sands, clear waters and natural caves make it an idyllic place for swimmers and snorkelers. The Blue Lagoon’s unmatched beauty has made it a prime filming location for many hit movies and television programmes. Popular with locals, the most serene time of day to visit one of the best beaches in Malta is early in the morning before the crowds arrive.

2 Golden Bay

It’s easy to see why Golden Bay gets its namesake. The golden sands are situated on the north-west coast of Malta. During the summer months, sun-worshippers flock to Golden Bay, one of Malta’s Blue Flag beaches, to hire parasols and sun-loungers and barbeque with the locals. To cool down, you can grab ice creams and cold drinks from one of the beach huts.

3 Xlendi Beach

The warm sands lie soft beneath your feet on Xlendi Beach on the south coast of Gozo. The beach’s shallow waters are ideal for swimming with youngsters. More adventurous travellers are attracted to the surrounding caves and cliffs, while scuba divers and snorkelers can explore the reefs in the colourful underwater world.

4 Ramla Bay

Ramla Bay is another of Gozo’s beautiful beaches. At the bottom of a verdant valley on the north coast of Gozo Island, you’ll find orange-tinged sands for relaxing or rocky dunes to explore. After your swim, stroll around the raw surrounding landscape to recharge in one of the rustic cafés.

5 Ghajn Tuffieha

Another of Malta’s Blue Flag beaches can be found when you descend the 100 steps from Manikata Village to Ghajn Tuffieha. Known for its reddish sand and breath-taking sunsets over stunning sea-views, you can escape the crowds to enjoy this virtually untouched landscape.

6 San Blas

In the north-east of Gozo, you’ll find San Blas’ burnt orange coastline. Ramla Bay’s little sister is hidden at the dip of a lush green valley and surrounded with cactus plants and succulent lemon trees. Don’t be put off by the steep walk down to the beach; the tranquil bay that awaits you is worth the trek.

7 St Peter’s Pool

You’ll find this paradisic lagoon tucked away in the south of Malta’s Dalimara Peninsula. Pack your picnic as you won’t find any food and drink facilities; this idyllic spot for snorkelling is secluded from the hustle and bustle.

8 Mellieha Beach

Malta’s largest Blue Flag-certified sandy beach, Mellieha Bay, is a vibrant entertainment beach resort. You can relax on a lounger, or, for the more active, you’ll have the choice of water sports including water skiing, windsurfing, kayaking and banana boats.

9 Gnejna Bay

One of Malta’s quietest beaches can be found near the village of Mgarr on the north coast. This locals’ beach is a great spot to relax away from other tourists. Swim in the shallows or explore deeper on a pedalo; unwind on the red shore or, for a more secluded spot, venture up to the flat rocks above one of the best beaches in Malta.

Malta is known for its splendid beaches, historical sites and Mediterranean weather. Any trip to this magnificent land is sure to be a dream. Ensure you visit at least one or two of the best beaches in Malta on your trip to this historic nation.
