Things to do:
It’s tempting to park beneath a palm tree for the duration of holidays to Koh Samui, but you wouldn’t want to stay put. The beaches and water sports are wonderful, but head inland and you’ll discover much more. The Big Buddha is one of the main attractions but it’s also worth the trek to the mystical Secret Buddha Gardens. Don’t miss the Friday night market at Bophut’s Fisherman’s Village for street food and souvenirs. Families and grown-ups alike love day trips to Koh Samui’s many attractions, which include a butterfly park, tiger zoo and water park. There’s a huge array of watersports here, as well as plenty of sports on dry land – think golf, quad biking and watching Thai boxing. And some of Samui’s spas are so good, that they’re attractions in their own right.
Koh Samui – Ang Thong Island by Speed Boat (£78pp):
Enjoy a relaxing day out to the Ang Thong Marine National Park made famous by the book ‘The Beach’. Snorkel or just laze around on one of the most fantastic beaches you’ll ever visit. Lunch is served on board as you cruise around to the most famous island in the park, home to the ‘Thale Nai’, an emerald salt water lake.
Food & drink:
Food is big news on Koh Samui holidays. As well as the seafood and spices for which Thailand is famous, Samui also takes influence from Malay, Indonesian and Indian flavours. Try satay sticks straight from a food stall, or take a table at a restaurant with a gorgeous beach view. It’s not all local dishes here though – you’ll find international names like McDonald’s and Starbucks, too.
In the evening:
Koh Samui comes to life after dark. There’s a heady mix of cabaret shows, karaoke bars, pubs, clubs and ladyboy shows. And if the timing’s right, you’ll get to join in with one of the planet’s most famous parties: the Full Moon bash. If you prefer your evenings a little more sedate, simply enjoy dinner beneath the stars.
