While Malta is beautiful in the summer, it is also a great destination to recharge your batteries in the cold UK autumn and winter months. In fact, Malta boasts over 300 days of sunshine, making it the ideal shoulder season destination!
Unlike other popular warm-weather destinations, Malta has the advantage of no seasonal break. That means you can enjoy the islands’ best hotels, restaurants, bars, cafes and clubs in the winter as well as the summer.
Not only are all the islands’ amenities available to you throughout the year, but Malta’s calendar is packed with events no matter what season you visit. Whether you’re looking to delve into the intriguing history of this archipelago, plan a hiking trip, go mountain biking or scuba diving, or just stick to trying the local cuisines, Malta has something for everyone.
Malta in Spring
Visiting Malta in the spring, any time from March to May, is a great idea for those looking to enjoy all that the islands have to offer culturally. Easter, for example, is an important holiday in Malta and is celebrated with processions and vigils throughout the islands.
During these months, temperatures average from 17 to 24 degrees. With little to no rain during April and May, you can easily explore Malta’s capital city Valletta or take part in one of the many adventure activities that Malta offers.
Malta in Summer
June to September boast long, hot, and sunny days. Those looking to enjoy water sports such as scuba diving (Malta is considered the second-best diving destination in the world), snorkelling, kayaking and paddleboarding; or those looking to soak up the sun on Malta’s beautiful beaches will have temps ranging from 28 to 32 degrees during the day and 22 to 24 degrees at night.
July and August are considered the high season in Malta, when the temperatures are at their hottest. Expect higher hotel prices with higher temperatures.
Malta in Autumn
The autumn months of October and November are a lovely time to visit. The climate is mild and most of the tourists have left. During these months you can enjoy the tourist attractions without too many people and the beauty of the beaches without umbrella battles. Plus, the average sea temperature during autumn is 24ºC – perfect for swimming.
With temperatures averaging between 18 and 25 degrees, autumn is an ideal time to enjoy the beautiful landscape with hiking, cycling and rock climbing.
Malta in Winter
If you plan to visit during December, January and February expect a cooler, but mild climate. Temperatures average from 10 to 17 degrees, with December being the warmest. It’s a great way to escape the usual greyness of UK winters at a low price. Hotels during the winter months are on average 30% less than during the summer months.
If you’re thinking about where you’d like to spend an unforgettable New Year’s Eve, Malta hosts dazzling fireworks displays and all-night celebrations every year.
The Journey to Malta
Malta is a three-hour flight from the UK, with daily departures from all major airports across the country to Malta International Airport. Several airlines operate direct flights to Malta including Air Malta, British Airways, Ryanair, Jet2, EasyJet and Wizz Air.
