Optional Excursions in Resort: Walking Tour Sete Cidades
Comprising 9 volcanic islands, the remote archipelago of the Azores are set like jewels in the sparkling Atlantic Ocean, approximately 1500km from the Portuguese coast. These little gems offer a paradisiacal land full of natural splendour surrounded by the never-ending blue of the Atlantic Ocean. Our walking tour takes place on the largest of the 9 islands, San Miguel, starting at the Vista do Rei viewpoint and finishing by the striking volcanic crater and lake of Sete Cidades. You will learn all about the islands volcanic activity and about how it formed the island’s dramatic scenery. Marvel at sweeping panoramic views of the north and west coast of the island. Also known as ‘the green island’, Sao Miguel is rich in exotic and endemic flora and fauna so keep your camera and binoculars at the ready to spot incense (Pittosporum undulatum), the cryptomeria (Cryptomeria japonica) and the yellow ginger lily (Hedychium gardenarum). On the way back to Ponta Delgada you will stop at the viewpoint of ‘Santiago’ lake. This small volcanic crater is set within the colossal crater of Sete Cidades. Gaze over the rim of the crater and be mesmerised by the glistening green and blue waters overlooked by peaceful forested countryside.
