The Eclipse of The Century – Monday 2nd August 2027

There is an incredible, natural event coming summer 2027. A celestial experience of a lifetime, dubbed as ‘the eclipse of the century!‘

The total solar eclipse on Monday August 2nd 2027 will pass through 10 countries across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. The greatest eclipse will be experienced in Luxor, Egypt, where the sun will be blocked for 6 minutes and 22 seconds.

Southern Spain & Gibraltar will experience between 3-4 minutes of totality depending where you are. Mahdia in Tunisia will go dark for just under 3 minutes and Djerba Island will see 4 minutes 43 seconds. Tangier in Morocco will black-out for 4 minutes 50 seconds. Other popular holiday spots will enjoy a good solar eclipse too, like Malta, with a 97% covering.

Make your next summer holiday REALLY special. Experience the ‘eclipse of the century’ on the 2nd of August 2027. At Going Luxury we have curated some special offer packages to help you witness this amazing celestial event.

Solar Eclipse August 2027
After the amazing solar eclipse of summer 2026, you won’t have too long to wait for the next one. On August 2nd 2027, the path of totality will skirt across Spain’s southern tip and over North Africa, meaning you can chase the shadow once again but this time surrounded by pharaohs and sarcophagi.

Luxor in Egypt is at the peak of 2027 eclipse-watching locations thanks to over 6 minutes of totality and a high likelihood of clear skies. Given the early afternoon timing, finding a vantage point won’t be hard. Visitors will likely flock to the ancient columns and sphinxes of the Karnak Temple and the clifftops overlooking the Valley of the Kings. These are undoubtedly amazing spots to catch the show, but securing your spot on a Nile cruise might just be the most epic option. Try to avoid eclipse-specific trips organized by major companies and instead hop on a local felucca—plus, you’ll appreciate the breeze in that August heat.

Located at the gateway to the Med, Gibraltar has a unique blend of British and Spanish cultures, as well as cracking views of Morocco (on a clear day). The city is well worth wandering around, beyond the obvious hike, especially for military history buffs. Just make sure you’re not too far into the labyrinth of tunnels when the eclipse hits!

There are also a couple of options for finding those wide open views that don’t involve a hefty workout on the glutes. The evocatively named Sandy Bay offers those south-facing vistas across the Strait of Gibraltar, while Western Beach is located right next to Gibraltar Airport’s runway, which you cross to enter the territory.

The southern resorts of the Costa del Sol in far south Spain will be great too. There is varying degrees of totality duration here from 3.39 minutes in Estepona, to 2.46 minutes in Torremolinos. Basically the further south you are and closer to Gibraltar, the longer you get. Malaga for example, will experience just 1.48 minutes.

One of North Africa’s many underrated gems, there’s way more to Tunisia than just the epic ruins of Carthage, giant Roman amphitheatres and the bustling Medina. There’s also more than the Sahara Desert, the traditional Berber dwellings of Tataouine (aka Tatooine) and fantastically affordable Mediterranean beach resorts.

In the southeast of Tunisia, off the coast of Sfax, lies a chain of islands called the Kerkennah Islands. Along with much of southern Tunisia, the Kerkennah Islands will get over 5.5 minutes of eclipse totality, without the crowds you’d expect in nearby Egypt but with the traditional felucca ride (or flouka, as they call it in Tunisia).

Tangiers in northern Morocco is also an excellent choice for the solar eclipse. Here it will be offering nearly 5 minutes of totality, while you wander through the old walled city with its historic market squares like the Grand Socco and Petit Socco.

Make your next summer holiday REALLY special. Experience the ‘eclipse of the century’ on the 2nd of August 2027. At Going Luxury we have curated some special offer packages to help you witness this amazing celestial event.
