Warsaw promises to whisk you away to one of the coolest cities in Europe. You’ll find a wealth of historic and cultural sights to explore, as well as a thriving nightlife when the sun goes down. Don’t leave without getting a taste for local cuisine. With pretty cobbled streets, ornate façades and beautiful plazas, the Old Town is one of the most picturesque parts of the city. You can’t help but fall in love with its olde worlde charm as you stroll through this UNESCO World Heritage Site. But it’s also a reminder of how the city has risen from the ruins of WWII, being completely rebuilt following the Warsaw Uprising of 1944. Make sure you see the Royal Castle, the Sigismund Column and the Rynek (the Town Hall Square). Polish cuisine, from tempting street food to traditional regional specialities. Why not start with the three ‘B’s’, that’s borscht (beetroot soup), bigos (stew made with spicy Polish sausage), and babka (a sweet loaf laced with rum syrup and icing). You’ve also got pierogi, which are tasty flavour-filled parcels, served either crispy and fried or soft and boiled; the ruskie (cheese and potato filling) are especially delicious. If you fancy a taste of ‘Polish pizza’ after a night out, keep an eye out for Zapiekani; this popular street food is an open-faced baguette with melted cheese, chopped mushrooms and ketchup. When it comes to nightlife, you’ll be spoilt for choice in Warsaw. There are lots of lively, bohemian bars over in Praga, and glamorous hangouts in the downtown area, as well as plenty of nightclubs where you can dance all night to big-name DJs. You’ll find hundreds of different types of vodka (Poland’s famous drink) served in most places, and beer is fast becoming a local favourite. If you’re looking for a more sophisticated evening, book yourself tickets to the ballet or a classical concert.
